Northern Rhône
France
Northern Rhône is the narrow, dramatic upper part of the Rhône Valley, stretching roughly from Vienne to Valence. Steep granite slopes dominate the landscape, and vineyards often cling to terraces above the river. Syrah is the key red grape here, producing wines that are savory, structured and aromatic, often with notes of pepper, violets and smoked meat. Whites are based on Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Famous appellations include Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas and Condrieu.
